Learning from Stories

Quick, think of a few stories (films, novels, plays, real history, etc.) where a central character gets sick or is injured.

Here are some stories I’ve seen involving health challenges:

  • Cyrano de Bergerac: injured in war, ambushed at the very end of the play. “J’emporte, malgré vous […] mon panache”.
  • Don Quixote in The Man of the Mancha.
  • Cat Stevens got tuberculosis. (True story). Then what happened?
  • Jack Brel got cancer and came back to publish some of his best work.
  • Pomme in La Dentellière (film, 1977) (English The Lacemaker film.)
  • Being There Ben Rand dies. And then “Chauncey Gardiner”…
  • Frida Kahlo: _Frida (biographical drama).

What can you learn from these stories should you get sick?

These questions I ask in the spirit of the Learning from Stories.

Answers to hubris

Scotland’s immortal poet reminds us that Destiny can respond as she wishes to The Best Laid Schemes of mice and men, including exclamations of “Watchez moé donc aller” (“watch me go”).

The Best Laid Schemes is also the title of an excellent book on emotion and fiction by Keith Oatley.

Speaking of emotion, I will be giving a keynote presentation next Saturday at the SnoozzZfest: All About Sleep International Virtual Conference – Oct 23 | Hopin. The title of my talk is:

Mind your Emotions

I hope to see you there.
