I’ve developed a structured meditation technique designed to enhance meta-cognitive control and attentional flexibility.

It’s called BSBM Meditation, short for Body Scanning, Breath, and Mantra. This approach weaves together three core practices—body scanning, breath awareness, and mantra repetition—into a single, cohesive routine. Optionally, it can be followed by a phase of reflective meditation, as outlined by Jason Siff in his book, Unlearning Meditation.

The Book I Read Last Year that Had the Greatest Impact on Me

It was September 2019. I had had difficulty ploughing through Richard Wright’s book, Why Buddhism is True. And I had recently “read” When Things Fall Apart (by Pema Chödrön) — which I found helpful in some respects, but also repetitious and lacking in rigour. So it was that the science journalist, Peter Brems, recommended to me the book, Thoughts Are Not the Enemy: An Innovative Approach to Meditation Practice, suggesting it was very different from Wright’s and quite worth the read.

Mind Wandering about Paul R. Fleischman’s Lecture on Features of Meditation: Homeostasis, Meta-management and More

Last summer I blogged about using the method of loci to memorize a Buddhist lecture on art.

This past Tuesday, Lam Wong and I attend Dr. Paul R. Fleischman’s lecture at UBC on the “The Universal Features of Meditation”. We were asked to turn off our devices and refrain from using recording devices of any kind.
